A woman aged in her 20s has died and three other people are injured after the light plane they were travelling in crashed on to a beach at Middle Island, just north of Agnes Water on the central Queensland coast.

A female passenger died, an emergency services source confirmed to 9NEWS, after the mid-morning crash near Middle Creek Road.

A second woman suffered a serious head injury and a man in his 20s suffered an ankle injury.

A man aged in his 60s, believed to be the pilot, was also seriously injured.

One passenger was airlifted to Bundaberg Hospital and the two others to Rockhampton Hospital, the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) advised via Twitter.

The plane was a “small plane believed to be involved in tourist activities”, QAS Rockhampton communications manager Mindy Thomas said.

“It’s unclear what caused the aircraft to come down at this stage,” she said.

“Middle Island is not easily accessible by road… most of our resources have been sent by helicopter.”

It is believed passengers on a tourist plane watched the second aircraft flying ahead of them crash onto the beach.

Frantic passengers then alerted authorities to the crash.
