An armed man locked himself inside a room at a psychiatric hospital in Istanbul causing panic across the city.

Police officers attempted to negotiate with the man who was reportedly threatening to kill himself and others.

There were earlier reports the man was holding a number of doctors and other staff hostage but Zekayi Kutlubay, the hospital's chief physician, confirmed all staff have been evacuated from the psychiatry unit.

"He is alone in the room," Mr Kutlubay told reporters outside of the hospital. "There is no hostage crisis."

Police later told The Associated Press that the 30-year-old man, who had been receiving psychiatric treatment at Cerrahpasa for the past two years, was taken to Istanbul's main psychiatric hospital.

Mr Kutlubay said the man was armed with a gun, even though the police force had earlier confiscated his gun because of his psychiatric problems. It was not immediately known how he obtained the weapon.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Istanbul following a number of deadly attack in the city, including an attack on a nightclub on New Year's Eve which left 39 people dead.
