A group of elephants has rushed in to rescue a young herd member when a crocodile clamped on its trunk and wouldn't let go.

The herd were drinking from a river in Liwonde National Park in Malawi when the reptile snapped at a smaller elephant's nose.

The mammal roared and reared back, dragging the croc onto land as it did so.

The herd initially step back in alarm before rushing back in to save the troubled elephant.

The video was filmed on Monday by Alexander Makanga, a Malawi-born biomedical scientist now living in the UK.

Mr Makanga watched the confronting and breathtaking exchange while on a boat safari.
