Hanson was found dead of “natural causes” inside his Hollywood Hills home this afternoon, according to a spokesperson with the Los Angeles Police Department.
TMZ reports the director died of a heart attack.
Hanson won an Oscar in 1998 for L.A Confidential, which starred Crowe, Guy Pearce and Kevin Spacey.
He also directed rapper Eminem in 2002’s 8 Mile and was also behind The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The River Wild and In Her Shoes.
He had withdrawn from life as director in recent years due to Alzheimer’s disease.
